Sex, Substances, and Safer Decisions

January is the perfect time for a reset. Beyond the typical resolutions for your health and well-being, you can also reset how you think about consent, safety, and sex. Alcohol and drugs change how people read cues, set boundaries, and remember details. Trying out a month of sobriety or even just paying closer attention to how you feel when you imbibe can provide you a chance to make clearer decisions that you can feel confident about the rest of the year.

How Substances Affect Consent

Intoxication lowers inhibition and judgment. That can lead to mixed signals or silence where a “no” belongs. Consent needs a clear yes and the ability to opt out at any time. If someone is very intoxicated, they cannot consent. Stop and check in. Offer water and a ride. Pick another night.

Sober Dating Ideas that Still Feel Fun

Plan dates that put your comfort first. Coffee and a walk. A museum. A cooking class. A game night with friends. You can learn a lot about each other without raising the stakes. If you do drink later in the month, set a two-drink limit before you go. Decide your cutoff, then stick to it.

Talk about Protection Before it is Urgent

Decide the basics when heads are clear. Condoms every time. Testing every three to six months. PrEP for ongoing HIV prevention if your risk fits. If you have male partners and are eligible, ask about DoxyPEP after condomless sex. Plan for emergencies too. Know where to get PEP within 72 hours of a possible HIV exposure.

Try this language:
“I like condoms every time. That works for me.”
“I was tested last month. When were you last tested?”
“I am on PrEP. What protection will we use tonight?”

If Plans Change

Maybe the condom broke or things progressed too fast and sex happened without one. Act fast. PEP must start within 72 hours after a possible HIV exposure. DoxyPEP works best within 24 hours and up to 72 hours for some people with male partners. Consider emergency contraception if pregnancy is possible. Plan follow-up testing using window periods.
